Understanding medical hypnosis

The hypnotic state is a natural state that we all experience in everyday life. For example, when we are so absorbed in reading a book that we no longer hear what is happening around us. Or when a captivating film makes us forget a headache.

Medical hypnosis is a focused and concentrated attention on something pleasant and restorative. It enables a sensation of deep mental relaxation and the incorporation of hypnotic suggestions, including those for pain relief.

According to Milton Erickson, the father of modern hypnosis: “Hypnosis is a relationship full of life that takes place within a person and is brought about by the warmth of another person.”

Fear of the dentist is more common than you might think

According to statistics, 70% of patients are afraid of dental treatment, of which 4% to an extreme degree. This fear can sometimes prove debilitating, causing people to avoid any consultation and ending up with a severe dental condition.

Thanks to medical hypnosis, a therapeutic tool recognised by the medical community, we can help you overcome this anxiety. This technique is practised with great sensitivity and is suitable for all audiences, both adults and children.

How does the treatment work?

1. First introductory appointment

A first appointment without any dental treatment is recommended. It allows the practitioner to get to know you and especially your imaginative world — your pleasant memories, your places of comfort, what soothes you.

2. Exploring your inner resources

It is precisely this world that you will use to recharge and overcome your fear and anxiety. The practitioner guides you towards a state of deep relaxation, in complete safety.

3. Treatment in complete serenity

At the following appointment, dental treatment is carried out while you are in a state of pleasant, calm and relaxed repose. You remain conscious and in control at all times.

Frequently asked questions

No, absolutely not. Contrary to popular belief, you remain conscious and in control at all times. Medical hypnosis has nothing to do with stage hypnosis. You can stop the session at any time if you wish.

The vast majority of people are receptive to medical hypnosis. It is a natural state that we all experience in everyday life. The first introductory appointment is specifically designed to assess your receptivity and adapt the approach to your needs.

Generally, one introductory session followed by one treatment session is sufficient. For cases of severe dental phobia, a more gradual approach may be offered.

Hypnosis can complement local anaesthesia, but does not generally replace it. It is primarily used to manage anxiety, fear and discomfort, making the experience much more pleasant.
