Bad breath: understanding and treating halitosis
Bad breath, or halitosis, is still a taboo subject today, yet many people suffer from it in their private and professional lives. However, in the vast majority of cases, the causes are found in the mouth and it is a condition that can be treated!
What causes bad breath?
To put it simply: bad breath is caused by bacteria. The oral cavity contains numerous bacteria that feed on food residue and dead cells. When they break down this residue, they produce sulphur compounds responsible for the unpleasant odour.
Contrary to popular belief, the causes of halitosis are generally not found in the digestive tract. Those affected should not feel stigmatised either — it is not a matter of poor personal hygiene.
Factors that contribute to bad breath
Insufficient oral hygiene
Irregular brushing, the absence of dental floss and tongue cleaning promote the multiplication of bacteria.
Dental diseases
Untreated cavities, fillings or crowns that are no longer sealed, and gum inflammation are common causes. Bacteria lodge in these areas and multiply undisturbed.
Periodontal disease
When tartar accumulates, the gum recedes and pockets form. These pockets are an ideal environment for bacteria, beyond the reach of the toothbrush.
Dry mouth
Certain medications, medical conditions and snoring reduce saliva production, which normally plays a role in neutralising bacteria.
Diet and smoking
Garlic, onions, alcohol and spicy foods cause temporary bad breath. Smoking causes persistent unpleasant breath and increases the risk of gum disease.
How is bad breath treated?
1. Comprehensive diagnosis
We begin with a thorough examination to identify the exact cause. It may involve untreated cavities, defective fillings, gum disease or other oral factors.
2. Treating the causes
Depending on the diagnosis: professional cleaning, replacement of defective fillings, treatment of cavities, or management of periodontitis. In the vast majority of cases, treating the oral causes resolves the problem.
3. Prevention and follow-up
We guide you on the best daily oral hygiene practices and establish a tailored follow-up programme to maintain fresh breath in the long term.
